Chat with Gemini now available in Google Messages on Android

Google held a short press event in Barcelona, Spain early Monday morning to announce several new features for Android. That included a new Chat with Gemini feature for Google Messages that lets you have conversations with Google’s leading AI products without leaving the app. But there was something more exciting about this event. It’s the McLaren F1 car that Google brought out to showcase his partnership with the famous F1 racing team.

Then again, the fact that McLaren relies on products from Google and Samsung to set world pitstop records doesn’t help with the everyday Android experience. New features Google introduced at the show and expanded generative AI support in more Android apps could help.

We use smartphone apps to send text messages, and we’ve been fighting over which messaging app is better for nearly 20 years. If anything, we’re good at texting. Because it has now become the main form of communication between people.

I don’t feel like I need AI to help me write in chat apps like iMessage, WhatsApp, or Google Messages. But I could be wrong. Generative AI can be useful in a variety of scenarios, and Google’s short Android presentation at MWC showed us that.

Gemini AI and Android Auto

One of the new Android features Google demonstrated in Barcelona concerns texting while driving. Again, this is something that could have already been prevented before Google Gemini was deployed. But now that generative AI is here to help, there’s one feature that could potentially save your life while driving.

Android Auto is definitely useful because it summarizes long texts. Instead of reading the entire text, you will get a summary that summarizes the key points.

I saw this feature in action on a BMW i5 M60 parked inside the Android Village. Of course, this was only his second coolest car at Google’s outdoor booth after the McLaren F1 race car.

You can also use Google Assistant to send and reply to messages, all while keeping your eyes on the road instead of your Android Auto screen.

Chat with Gemini within Google Messages

As for the regular Google Messages experience, the “Chat with Gemini” feature will roll out to some eligible devices soon. That means Pixel 6 or newer, Pixel Fold, Galaxy S22 or newer, Galaxy Z Fold or Flip. It works in English in all countries where this feature is deployed, and in French in Canada. Just update Google Messages to the latest update and sign in using your personal account.

Once the feature is enabled,[Gemini とチャット]You can start by tapping the button. There is one important thing to remember here. Chats with Gemini are not end-to-end encrypted. These are chats with AI, not chats with friends and family.

Google Messages also supports Magic Compose in Google Messages, with Gemini powering the experience. This is one of the things I tried out at his Android booth at Google, using AI to give my “Android Buddy” a Shakespearean version of my previous MWC experiences.

For Magic Compose, Google only uses the previous 20 messages to obtain context. Data is processed on Pixel 8 Pro and Galaxy S24 devices or sent to the cloud on other devices. Google does not retain these messages and Gemini is not trained on them. In this case, RCS messages remain encrypted end-to-end.

More Android experiences announced at MWC

Apart from introducing Gemini in Android Auto, Google announced seven new Android features.

  • Generative AI can create captions for images in Lookout.
  • Google Maps Lens provides an enhanced screen reader that lets you read information about nearby places, such as opening hours, ratings, and directions, on your phone.
  • Google Docs supports handwritten annotations. Mark up documents using your hand or stylus on your phone or tablet.
  • Android’s output switcher now supports Spotify Connect devices.
  • The redesigned Fitbit app now supports health data from a variety of wearable devices, including AllTrails, Oura, and MyFitnessPal.
  • Google Wallet Pass is now available on Wear OS devices.
  • Public transportation directions available in Google Maps on Wear OS

What do you think of McLaren’s F1 car?

Last season, McLaren recorded an astonishingly fast pit stop time in one race. This 1.8 second pit stop is now a world record. That’s not only thanks to the well-trained teams performing the task in unison when the F1 cars pit. McLaren worked with Google and Samsung to achieve this feat.

The team used Android devices during practice to capture and share videos of their workouts across devices.

McLaren Racing announced at MWC that it will deepen its partnership with Google. This season, McLaren will be using Google Pixel devices in addition to Samsung phones. Additionally, Google AI helps collect and manage your race data.

F1 fans will recognize the markings of this partnership on race cars. Expect to see Google Chrome, Android and Pixel branding on F1 cars and the attire of drivers and crew.
