As Superintendent of the Palo Alto Unified School District, I have witnessed firsthand the transformation of students who struggled with previous early literacy methods but thrived after aligning our approach with the science of reading.
Of the more than 900 elementary school students who were one or more grades behind in 2022, 54% are now meeting or exceeding their grade level. For the second year in a row, she has led the state in reading growth among low-income Hispanic students in her third grade.
The best part? Our success is repeatable, and the steps to achieve it are outlined in Rep. Rubio’s bill, AB 2222. We cannot accept that 70% of our most marginalized students cannot read proficiently, especially given our success stories and proven approaches.
I urge all of us to support this important bill. Together, we can address literacy inequalities and create a brighter future for all children.

The devastation in Gaza
The most impactful issue facing the world today is Israel’s long-term oppression of the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip.
After World War II, the world witnessed the full extent of the Jewish Holocaust committed by the German people. This led to his creation of the state of Israel in 1948, expelling the Palestinian Arabs in the process.
Seventy-eight years of the international community’s blindness to the plight of Palestinians in Gaza and Israel, and its disregard for its moral and ethical responsibilities towards Palestinians, have created the current Palestinian Holocaust.
Israel’s systematic oppression and massacre of Palestinians is an abhorrent act today. In Gaza, an unintended consequence of the creation of a Jewish homeland, it will take the world’s collective will and determination to reverse years of devastation. Remember your mother’s advice: “Two wrongs do not make a right.”
