Applications are now being accepted for the Cavendish Arts and Sciences Fellowship at Girton College. This unique collaboration opportunity is not limited to a single aesthetic, theme or medium and is open to artists from all over the world.

Artists with no previous experience of collaborating with scientists or working in a scientific environment are especially encouraged to apply.

We seek adventurous artists who explore alternative ways of seeing the world and work with communities underserved by the mainstream. Fellowships provide opportunities for playful experimentation and space to rethink beyond traditional artistic and scientific boundaries.

Previous Cavendish Arts and Sciences Fellows include experimental filmmaker Logan Dandridge, who brought a special interest in memory, nonlinear time, and the Black experience to conversations with physicists; These include artist and composer Áine Bailey, whose interests in sound, architectural acoustics, and sonic autobiography influenced her. current fellow artist and dancer Robert Sempilla; Sempilla’s “regenerative art practice” confronts decolonial questions about the nature of home and belonging, exploring the past, present and future in ways that rethink traditional exploitative narratives. . Insights into the experiences of previous fellows can be found on our website.

The one-year fellowship begins in October 2024 and ends in October 2025, and the duration of the stay in Cambridge will typically be at least six months and up to one year. The exact dates of the residency are flexible and will be agreed with the selected artist.

Application deadline: Sunday 19 May 2024, 11:59pm British Summer Time (GMT+1). For more information and to apply, please see below. Please visit here.

About Cavendish Arts Sciences and Fellowships
Cavendish Arts Sciences creates a collective encounter between art and science that explores the world, our humanity, and our place in it. We support works of art that question traditional ways of centering and recognizing voices. Our program creates a new space to reimagine the physical and non-physical universe.

our philosophy
Experimentation: We work with adventurous artists who explore alternative ways of knowing the world and create work that questions and disrupts the status quo through a playful and experimental approach. Decentering: We work with artists whose creative work is immersed in communities that are underprivileged in the mainstream. Re-imagining: We create spaces of re-imagining, beyond traditional artistic and scientific boundaries, where new and unfamiliar forms emerge in radically different ways.

The Cavendish Arts Science Fellowship supports our spirits. It is designed to enable artists to develop thought-provoking ideas through engagement with physicists and people from other disciplines, and to experiment with innovative, boundary-pushing new approaches to practice.

This is being delivered through a partnership between Cavendish Arts Sciences, an initiative of the Cavendish Laboratory in the Department of Physics, University of Cambridge, and Girton College, University of Cambridge, thanks to the vision and support of Una Ryan.

This fellowship is supported financially.
– A bursary of £10,000 to be paid to the artist towards living costs and expenses.
– Provision of rent-free accommodation and meals at Girton College for the duration of your stay in Cambridge
– A travel allowance of up to £3,000 (depending on the artist’s location) will be made available to support travel costs to and from Cambridge.
– A production budget of £10,000 will be made available to support the development of new work arising from the Fellowship.

About the Cavendish Institute
The Cavendish Laboratory has an extraordinary history of discovery and innovation in physics since its opening in 1874. Research at the Cavendish Laboratory has helped us understand the physical world, from creating the theory of electromagnetism and discovering the electron to splitting the atomic nucleus. Developing X-ray crystallography to observe the interior of atoms. Today, the fundamental problems solved by laboratory research explore time, space, matter, and energy in a variety of shapes and scales, from the very large to the inconceivably small. The Cavendish Laboratory is scheduled to move to a new state-of-the-art home, the Ray Dolby Center, in 2024.
