Cassia aims to pair Wine/DXVK/VKD3D-Proton/FEX for Windows games on Android

Cassia is an ongoing effort to run Microsoft Windows desktop games on Android. This ongoing effort is fundamentally similar to Steam Play’s approach, but targets Android users by utilizing FEX to emulate x86_64 binaries with Wine, DXVK, VKD3D-Proton, and AArch64. That’s what I mean.

This morning at FOSDEM 2024 in Brussels, Danylo Piliaiev and Igalia spoke about the TURNIP Mesa driver, which provides open source Vulkan API support for Qualcomm Adreno graphics hardware. This open source His Adreno Vulkan driver matures nicely with integrated support for the Adreno 700 series, various new His Vulkan API extensions, further improvements in accuracy, and other achievements. I’ve been doing it.

TURNIP is making good progress and you can learn more through the FOSDEM presentation.

During that conversation, we brought up the Cassia project, which I had never heard of before. Cassia is working on running desktop (Windows) games on Android by leveraging Wine, DXVK, VKD3D-Proton, and FEX-Core. It includes many of the same components that power Valve’s Steam Play, plus the addition of his FEX to handle x86-64-on-AArch64 support.

Cassia looks interesting, but it’s still in development, so my excitement was a little muted when I read the details. This post outlines the details of Cassia for Android, aiming for release in 2024. One thing that many people will immediately be disappointed with is that Cassia is planned to be closed-source software. Developers plan to upstream changes to the open source projects they use, but Cassia says it will be closed source. However, if you decide to stop working on the project, you “promise” to open it up afterwards. sauce.

Cassia only focuses on getting Windows games on Android, not Linux games. They also want to be able to run Steam itself on his Cassia on Android.

In addition to all the software challenges of running Windows games on Android AArch64 devices, many Android devices aren’t powerful enough if you’re looking to run AAA Windows games on your smartphone/tablet. There is also the problem. Either way, it will be interesting to see what happens to Cassia in 2024.
