Calling for the next generation of women and girls in science
The Australian Professional Association of Forest Scientists, Managers and Growers is using this year’s International Day for Women and Girls in Science as a call to arms for the next generation to get involved in forest science.
Australian Forestry Chairman Dr Michelle Freeman said Sunday 11 February would be International Day of Women and Girls in Science.
“There are many amazing women in forestry across Australia who are at the forefront of the science behind the successful management of forests and the wider environment,” Dr Freeman said.
“On February 11, we want to celebrate all these women and encourage the next generation of women and girls to follow in their footsteps.
“When you ask people to imagine the typical person involved in forest and fire management, they tend to think of very narrow stereotypes, but the reality is very different. We do the most innovative and creative research for the world. Improving our environment, communities, and economy – that’s what defines our career goals.
“There are many opportunities for the next generation of women and girls to lead the science in our field and advance science-based decision-making in carbon capture, wildfire management, conservation, renewable energy, and more. tells them, “If you do that, you can too. I love you.”
Some of the women from across Australian Forestry shared their thoughts and experiences on this International Day for Women and Girls in Science.
Dr Teagan Brown, Victoria
“The fuel that burns in grassland and forest fires is plants. In my current role as a researcher at CFA, I use climate models and landscape data to predict future vegetation and fuel types. Use data to predict future fire activity. Model the number and type of fire management resources Victoria’s fire agencies will need. Data is not neutral, but built from context and real-world experience. Interpreted by scientists through a lens that allows more diverse people to contribute to and make decisions on land. will be strengthened.”
