Cafeteria workers receive support from local businesses to provide meals to multiple school districts

MALVERN, AR – Carol Catlett was a cafeteria worker in the Ouachita School District in Hot Springs County who felt she needed to feed others.

“My theory is that we give prisoners three meals a day, so why can’t children get two meals a day?” Catlett said.

Catlett said many local cafeterias are in dire straits as children go hungry, schools owe money on overdue lunches, and parents sometimes can’t afford to buy groceries due to rising food costs. He said he was depressed.

“Paid lunches are $2.80, but since the pandemic, grocery prices have increased significantly by three times, making it increasingly difficult to feed for under $2.80,” Catlett said. .

Catlett said she couldn’t stand to see her children go hungry.

“We can’t deny our kids lunch time knowing that it doesn’t matter what we are obligated to feed them,” Catlett said. “If you end the year with debt, the school has to step in and cover that debt, but the school doesn’t have the funds for that debt.”

When she felt the need, she knew she needed to contact Denny Teeter of Teeter Chevrolet in Malvern.

She asked if Denny could help pay for some of these meals.

Denny was determined to support not only the Ouachita School District, but all school districts in Hot Springs County.

This includes Ouachita, Bismarck, Magnet Cove, and Malvern. Denny then added Poyen, Sheridan, and Mena to the list, creating a total of seven school districts. Each school district will receive $500 in school lunch funding.

“Do whatever you can, a little or a lot, but it’s our kids,” Denny said. “My mother was a teacher, so I always grew up hearing stories. It made me realize how hard everyone at these schools, from the teachers to the bus drivers, tried to take care of their students. I know.”
