Many wildlife rides provide context for students and their projects. BVU science faculty and top science students helped with judging and other tasks related to the event. TIMES PILOT PHOTO BY DOLORES CULLEN

Buena Vista University hosted the Western Iowa Science and Technology Fair for the first time last Saturday, giving students from 11 high schools and eight middle schools the opportunity to display their projects, as well as higher education at the impressive Estell College. It gave me the opportunity to see the potential. Sievens Science Center.

On the other hand, there was a project called “Analysis of the mechanism of intraneuronal amyloid beta aggregation caused by cellular dysfunction and oxidative stress in Alzheimer’s disease.”

Kenten Gareth, a middle school student from Remsen, made a model of his prosthetic hand out of cardboard. His fingers move by pulling on the wire loops visible below. He experimented with it to see what he could pick up. He wrote, “My prosthetic arm is cheap, but some of his arms alone cost $120 million!”

On the other hand, “Which brand of toilet paper dissolves the fastest?” Charlotte Smith of Algona Junior High School found that when she put various brands of toilet paper in water, she found that Angel Soft dissolved the fastest, resulting in clogged drains. I have found that this is unlikely. Angel Soft takes 4 days, but Kleenex does not dissolve even after 40 days. One of the things that struck her about her project was the fact that the average person uses 8.6 sheets “per time.”

Luis Osorio-Santiago answered a question about whether great apes prefer playing with sticks and leaves rather than plastic balls or Kongs. He avidly observed bonobos in Des Moines and discovered that they prefer “the richness of nature.”

Each participant used the scientific method. The process from hypothesis to conclusion was shared through posters and oral explanations.

“BVU is excited to promote science and engineering in Iowa as the new host of WISEF,” said BVU Dean of Science Tom Bonagura. “Having a record number of students on campus demonstrating a passion for science is an inspiration to all of us who teach in this field.”

BVU will sponsor the top two winners and their teachers to attend an international trade show in Los Angeles. There were no locals among the participants.

Hayden Wellman took swabs from toilet seats, toilet handles and sink faucets in men’s and women’s restrooms to see which caused more bacterial growth. Her hypothesis that the men’s restroom was “filtier” was disproven.

The judges will hear from high school students who try different methods to speed up soil decomposition.
