Steamboat Springs Nordic skier Alexa Brabec is the first American to win a medal in the women’s Nordic combined individual event at the Junior World Championships.
This year, the Junior World Championships will be held in Planica, Slovenia, where the world’s top Nordic athletes under the age of 20 will compete.
On Friday, the men’s and women’s individual events took place, with Brabec and three American teammates taking on the HS102 normal hill and 5km cross-country ski race.
At the top of the hill, Brabec rose to 10th place with 86.5 meters. She started the cross-country race 1 minute and 8 seconds behind the first-place jumper, but was able to quickly catch up to the leaders with the fastest overall time.
Brabec ended up taking the gold medal after completing 3.75 kilometers, but fell to second place and missed out on the gold medal by 1.5 seconds.
Joining Brabec at Planica are two Steamboat Springs skiers, Emma Wilson and Alexa Brabec’s sister Haley.
Haley jumped 30th for 26th place and has since moved up four spots. Wilson was right behind Haley at the end of the ski race and jumped to 29th overall before finishing 27th overall.
On the men’s side, Steamboat’s Arthur Tirone was 39th after jumping the normal hill, but Tirone improved his time in the 10km race and moved up to 27th place.
The championships continue with the Nordic competition for the women’s team on Saturday, followed by the men’s team on Sunday.
