BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A new exhibit celebrating the history of hip-hop and science will soon be on display at the McWane Science Center in Birmingham, with help from the City Council.
Birmingham City Council approved $450,000 in aid at Tuesday’s council meeting to help make the exhibit, which incorporates music and STEM principles, possible. The 7,000-square-foot exhibit includes a DJ and MC station that teaches kids the relationship between beat-making and math and science, and the relationship between turntables and technology and engineering.
“We thought it would be a great fit, especially since hip-hop music and culture is so technical,” said Eric Risee, vice president of exhibition facilities and planning at the McWane Science Center.
Lisee said the idea for the exhibit has been conceptualized for the past four years. So far, the McWane Center has raised $1.1 million through fundraising efforts and plans to raise even more throughout the year.
“We have a lot of hip-hop people in our community, and they’ve been advisors who have helped us move forward with this development,” said Birmingham City Council President Darrell O’Quinn. “This is another chance for someone to come up with a unique idea, and there’s nothing like it anywhere else.”
Mr O’Quinn said it was vital to expose children to STEM principles, adding that the exhibition was a creative way to do that, while also bringing economic and tourism benefits to Birmingham.
“It’s about meeting the communities they’re in, tapping into what many young people are already interested in, and using that as an entry point to educate them about what they know is important to their future development. “It’s something that helps,” he said. .
Development of the exhibit is scheduled to begin in 2025, but could take six years to complete.
