President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump both secured enough delegates to be their parties’ presidential nominees, setting up a rematch in the November general election.

Biden hit a magic number in delegate allocation from Georgia, a battleground state critical to victory in the 2020 general election. Trump then won the Washington state primary, securing the Republican nomination.

Here’s where CNN has predicted the winners so far:

  • biden He will win the Democratic primaries in Georgia, Mississippi and Washington.

The results are still outstanding: The Hawaii Republican Party is holding its caucus, which ends at 2 a.m. ET. Voting also ends tonight in the Democratic Party Abroad primary, the official Democratic Party division for Americans living abroad.

Biden aims for rematch: The president said in a statement that he is honored to be the party’s presumptive nominee. He warned that “freedom and democracy” were at risk, posing a threat to the United States as President Trump turned his attention to the general election. “Voters now have to make a choice about the future of our country,” Biden said.
Mr. Trump criticizes Mr. Biden as follows. “We have to start working now to defeat Joe Biden,” the former president lashed out at his opponents in a video posted to social media after becoming the Republican nominee. He emphasized the importance of November’s election, telling his supporters: “This vote will be the most important vote you will ever cast.”
But we have a long way to go. The 2024 matchup will be the longest tied general election battle in the past half century. Republican challenger Nikki Haley has withdrawn her candidacy in the primary with 244 days left until the November election. The 2004 general election between Republican incumbent George W. Bush and Democratic challenger John Kerry also began 244 days before Election Day, according to a Pew Research Center analysis.

  • Biden: 2,099 (1,968 was needed for the president to become the presumptive Democratic nominee)

Republican:

  • Trump: 1,228 (the former president needed at least 1,215 delegates to win the Republican nomination)

Remember: Neither Mr. Trump nor Mr. Biden will officially become candidates until votes are cast at this summer’s national conventions.
