BDO USA has appointed Mark Ellenbogen as chief operating officer, effective July 1, 2024.
Ellenbogen, a Washington, D.C.-based assurance partner who has been with the accounting firm for 22 years, succeeds Steve Ferrara, who is retiring after 33 years at BDO, where Ferrara served as chief operating officer for the past 12 years.
“Steve has made countless valuable contributions to our firm, including overseeing incredible revenue growth of more than 350% since 2012 and successfully establishing an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) last August,” said Wayne Burson, CEO of BDO USA. “We are confident that Mark will carry on Steve’s legacy and use his leadership to lead the firm into a new chapter of sustainable, people-first growth.”
Mr. Ellenbogen has more than 30 years of experience as a chartered accountant, including more than 20 years with BDO, where he played a central role in the growth and management of the firm’s audit and assurance practice.
He has held positions including office managing partner for the Assurance Practice in Greater Washington, DC, national leader of the Public Sector Practice and assistant regional technical director for the Mid-Atlantic Region.
As a director, Mark chaired the Governance Committee and played a key role in establishing the ESOP.
He holds a Bachelor of Accounting and Finance from the University of Cape Town, South Africa, and is a Chartered Accountant.
“Taking on the role of COO is both an honor and an exciting opportunity. I have been proud to contribute to the company’s success over the past 22 years and am ready to build on my track record and reach new heights as an ESOP company,” said Ellenbogen. “I’m grateful for Steve’s guidance during this transition and for the unwavering support of Wayne, the management team and the board of directors.”
Chicago-based BDO USA is the fifth-largest accounting firm in the nation with annual revenues of $12.8 billion and more than 12,200 employees.
