(KRON) – San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park turns 154 today. The park’s birthday is particularly significant, ranking 19th on USA Today’s list of America’s best parks.
“What better way to celebrate your birthday than by being nominated as one of America’s best parks,” San Francisco Mayor London Breed said at Thursday’s celebration.
Breed was seen celebrating the park’s birthday near the flower conservatory, the park’s oldest building, along with other city officials and community members. Celebrations included a rock climbing wall and birthday cake.
“This park is part of San Francisco’s cultural fabric. It’s a great place to celebrate, relax, play sports, bird watch, see bison, watch a concert, and even take a swing.” It’s a place where you can dance and have fun,” said Phil Ginsburg, general manager of recreation and parks.
Before Golden Gate Park was born, the park was originally named “Outside Lands” when William Hammond Hall, the park’s first superintendent, first began designing it in 1870.
During the 1906 earthquake, the park also served as a campground for approximately 200,000 displaced San Franciscans.
Since then, the 1,017-acre park has expanded from natural sand dunes, picnic and relaxation areas, playgrounds, art installations, a 2.4-mile car-free boardwalk, live music, festivals, sporting events, museums, lakes, gardens, and bison. , monuments, monuments, children’s playgrounds, etc.
Currently, an estimated 25 million people visit the park annually. The park is home to several unique gardens, including the San Francisco Botanical Garden, the Japanese Tea Garden, the Queen’s Wilhelmina Garden, the Conservatory of Flowers, the Rose Garden, and the Shakespeare Garden.
At the birthday celebration, the Mayor, along with Rec and Parks General Manager Phil Ginsburg, encouraged all San Franciscans to vote for their parks online.
Everyone can vote once per day until voting ends on Monday, April 8th at 9am PT. The top 10 winning parks will be announced on April 17th.
“Golden Gate Park is the city’s crown jewel, and San Franciscans, people from all over the Bay Area and from around the world come to enjoy its splendor,” Breed said.
