A total of 3,348 deals were announced worldwide in January 2024, including M&A, private equity, and venture finance deals. This was a decrease of 34.1% compared to 5,083 transactions in the same month last year.
This is according to GlobalData, which revealed that trading volumes for all covered trade types decreased last month.
The number of M&A deals decreased by 29.2% compared to January 2023, and private equity and venture finance deal volumes decreased by 45% and 40.6%, respectively.
Aurojyoti Bose, Principal Analyst at GlobalData, said:
“Following a downward trend in deal activity in 2023, weak dealmaking sentiment continued in 2024, with declines seen in the first months of the year. In fact, all regions of the world and Trading volumes have declined in several major markets.
In North America, trading volume in January 2024 decreased by 38.4% compared to January 2023. Similarly, Europe, Asia-Pacific, Middle East and Africa, and South and Central America also recorded year-on-year declines of 35.8% and 23.8%. %, 33%, and 52% in January 2024, respectively.
Meanwhile, the top two markets by transaction volume, the United States and China, saw their number of transactions decrease by 38.8% and 20.9%, respectively, in January 2024 compared to January 2023.
Other major markets such as the UK, India, Canada, Japan, Germany, South Korea, Australia, and France had respective turnover of 27.7%, 33.9%, 33.8%, 25.5%, 40.8%, 16.7%, 6.8%, and January 2024: 55.9% compared to the same period last year
