- Chrome for Android’s “Listen to this page” feature will soon support background playback.
- This allows users to continue listening to online articles even when the Chrome app is not open or active.
- Chrome on desktop has supported this feature for some time now.
Google Chrome’s mobile app has a “Listen to this page” option that opens a webpage and lets you listen to the content within it, just like an audiobook. When you select this option, a mini player appears at the bottom of the screen, where you can adjust the reading speed, change the voice, and move forward or backward through the content. The app also highlights the text as it is being read, allowing you to read visually.
The only real limitation is that the feature requires the Chrome app to be open and active for playback to continue, which means that playback will stop if you switch to another app or lock the screen.
But the text-to-speech feature is about to get a pretty significant update: the Google Chrome app for Android phones will soon support background playback ( MS Power User), which means users will be able to listen to articles even if the Chrome app is not open or active. MS Power User discovered read-aloud-background-playback
It’s flagged in the description as “Adding support for background playback for Read Aloud,” revealing that the feature is currently being tested by the search engine giant.
This isn’t surprising, given that Chrome for desktop supports background playback even when an online article tab is minimized or another application is in use, but it’s interesting to see Chrome for Android catching up on the feature.
