AT&T is finally resetting passcodes for current customers after hackers stole large amounts of customer data over two years ago.
The majority of the compromised passcodes belonged to approximately 65.4 million current and former AT&T customers. But the company, in its proverbial abundance of caution, reset the passcodes for 7.6 million of its current customers.
A passcode is typically a four-digit number used to verify a customer account when accessed by the customer or AT&T support staff. This breach did not compromise account passwords.
Although passcodes and other information are encrypted, it is possible to decrypt the data. In addition to passcodes, the leaked data includes customers’ names, dates of birth, home addresses, phone numbers, and social security numbers.
The stolen data was first reported on a hacker forum in 2021. AT&T had previously denied that the hack was real.
The company continues to say there is no evidence of “unauthorized access to its systems that resulted in the exposure of data sets.”
The company launched a new webpage to report the incident and provide tips on how customers can keep their accounts safe.
“Our internal teams are working with external cybersecurity experts to analyze the situation,” AT&T said in a statement. The company added that the compromised data “does not include personal financial information or call history,” and that the company will provide free identity theft and credit monitoring services to affected customers.
