Science and art collide at university Hawaii-West Oahu‘s newest creative media course, the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) class. ah system.

In the fall of 2023, ah West Oahu Associate Professor of Chemistry Brad Ashburn begins teaching Creative Media 108 (CM 108): Creative Processes in the Physical Sciences, a unique collaboration between creative media and the departments of Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Health Sciences.

“When I think of science, I usually think of numbers, research reports, and rigorous experiments for which the professor already knows the answer. But CM 108 combines design and science,” creative media student Ashley Macho said. “While learning science, you can also do something artistic. And since this is design, what each group in the class creates will all be different. There are no right answers.”

In this course, students investigate physical science problems, develop and test hypotheses, interpret results, and iterate designs. Mechanical and electronic devices are designed and constructed using physical science and computational reasoning and computation. The creative process of science is emphasized and practiced throughout the course.

“CM 108 inspires creativity and curiosity about the natural world and teaches students to see science through an artistic lens,” said Director Sharla Hanoaka. ah West OahuCreative Media Academy. “Problem-solving processes vary by field. In this course, you will learn new ways to solve challenges and find solutions in creative ways.”

CM 108 students are using Swift. Swift is a powerful, modern, and secure programming language used by software developers to build applications for her Apple iPhone, iPad, Mac, and more. It is approachable and fun for beginners to learn coding.

“The goal of this collaboration is to expand participation in computing. ah West Oahu “A hands-on, project-based approach to learning science allows students to be creative,” Ashburn said.
