Arkansas mother charges son’s battery and makes him walk 13 miles to school

An Arkansas mother was arrested after allegedly telling deputies it was “not my problem” after her 7-year-old son missed his school bus and had to walk nearly 13 miles in the dark.

The 33-year-old woman was charged with second-degree domestic assault and first-degree endangering the welfare of a minor under 10, according to Craighead County jail records.

The boy was found near a farmer’s market around 8 a.m. Tuesday by responding Craighead County deputies, KAIT reported. The Jonesboro, Ark.-based television station said the boy told the deputy he would be in trouble if he didn’t go to school, and that he decided to walk after missing the bus.

In a conversation with the deputy, the boy said his mother had forced him to go to bed without dinner because he had “got into trouble” the night before, KAIT reported.

USA TODAY reached out to the Craighead County Sheriff’s Office, but did not immediately receive a response Thursday.

Handcuffs are attached to security bars at the Oklahoma County Jail.

Why did a 7-year-old boy get into “trouble”?

According to an affidavit obtained by KAIT, the child got into trouble when her mother asked her to watch over her 2-year-old brother, but at some point she became distracted.

The boy was sent to bed by his mother, who told him to wake up and set his alarm so he could get ready for school because “she wasn’t going to do that,” the affidavit said. stated in the affidavit.

When the boy started walking to school, it was dark and he had not eaten breakfast, KAIT said, according to the affidavit. The television station added that the child’s home is about 12.5 miles from the school.

After speaking with the boy, deputies spoke to a 911 caller who told them they could not reach the boy’s mother, KAIT said. According to the television station, the lieutenant drove the boy home, where he encountered his mother sleeping in her bedroom.

KAIT said the mother woke up and confirmed everything her son had told the deputy, stating that her son was old enough to take care of his 2-year-old brother and get him ready for school. It is said that The television station reported that during a conversation with her representative, her mother said in her affidavit that it was “not her problem” that her child had to walk to school. That’s what it means.

Deputies took the boy’s mother to jail, and then deputies returned to the home with the Arkansas Department of Human Services. While speaking with other children in the home, authorities noticed “numerous bruises” on the 3-year-old’s body, according to his affidavit.

When the 3-year-old’s father spoke to a deputy, he admitted to hitting the toddler on March 31 for lying, but added he didn’t know about the bruises, KAIT reported. In his affidavit, the TV station reported, his father said he was told that his youngest brother had hit the 3-year-old with a plastic bat.

The boy’s mother was released on $50,000 bail Wednesday, according to Craighead County jail records.
