Apple’s “biggest” update to its operating system will leave older iPhones out in the cold.
The iOS 18 update scheduled for June will include four new features powered by artificial intelligence, including large-scale language models (LLMS) and a generative AI app called iWork.
However, these features only work on iPhones with the powerful A12 Bionic chip. That means anyone still using an iPhone 8 Plus or earlier model is excluded.
Additionally, users of the first-generation budget iPhone Series SE (Special Edition) line, introduced in 2016, will also no longer have access to the updated features.
Older iPhones have older hardware chips with slower processors and less memory that can’t support the powerful features that come with updates.
iPhones that cannot handle iOS 18 software are also expected to be unable to access all future iOS updates.
Apple representatives did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment.
Apple’s A12 Bionic chip first appeared in the Cupertino, California-based company’s iPhone XR and XS models, which were launched in late 2018.
This means that in addition to iPhone XR and XS, the new features are also available on 2nd and 3rd generation iPhone SE models and all smartphones in the iPhone 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15 model lines.
According to Apple news site MacRumors, the iOS 18 features that users are looking forward to include a new home screen design feature that will allow eligible iPhone users to add white space, rows and columns between apps. .
Apple Maps could boast a custom route option that allows travelers to choose the route they want to take, rather than being limited to pre-selected options provided by Apple, MacRumors reported.
The rumored features (including a possible partnership with Google’s AI bot Gemini) are expected to be announced by Apple during the World Wide Developers Conference, which runs from June 10th to June 14th. This will be confirmed upon release.
WWDC is expected to start with a keynote, traditionally announcing new operating systems for the iPhone, Mac, iPad, Apple Watch, and TV.
There’s also talk of owners of the newly released Apple Vision Pro headset waiting for an operating system update.
According to the Daily Mail, if the Gemini partnership is true, users of new iPhone models will be able to create images and write essays based on simple prompts.
AI will also be used to improve Siri, allowing the digital assistant to respond more accurately to queries.
Apple’s Messaging app also plans to incorporate AI to “type questions and autocomplete text,” Bloomberg’s Mark Garman said in his Power On newsletter. Ta.
