Apple’s Presto machines wirelessly update sealed and boxed iPhone units inside U.S. Apple Stores

The “Presto” system is very good. Sounds like science fiction. Three rows of sealed iPhone boxes sit side by side in a locker-like area inside an Apple Store in the U.S. Two rows of each Presto machine fit six iPhone boxes; It takes only 20 seconds to be in the right position “on the rails”.

Over the next 15 to 30 minutes, each iPhone in the locker will be powered on wirelessly, partially using the MagSafe wireless charging system. When the unit powers on, it updates with the latest version of iOS and then powers off. All of this is done without opening the box, manually turning on the phone to update, and resealing it.

According to iGeneration (via 9to5Mac), the entire “Presto” system runs on a Mac mini. When the Apple Store technician scans her iPhone box, that particular unit will be added to the list of devices that need updating. The machine also tells Apple Store staff which units need to run on the system and checks daily sales records to determine which units need to be processed the next day.

According to a report from iGeneration, even if Apple Store staff are not trained on the machines, they will be participating in the process of wirelessly updating sealed iPhones. If an Apple Store employee walks by a machine and sees the status light is green (instead of the original white), the phone in that box has been updated and is from the “Presto” machine. You can see that it can be removed. The boxes removed from the machine are added to the store’s inventory of boxed and sealed iPhone units that are updated and ready for sale.

When you purchase a specific SKU (each SKU is associated with a specific model, color, and storage capacity), “Presto” will notify the Apple Store to update the same SKU. This is great because it means that no matter which iPhone model an Apple Store customer wants to buy, it will be available and updated in the color and storage capacity that the buyer wants. When new inventory arrives at the Apple Store, the machine tells staff which models need to be updated. When a new iOS update drops, the machine tells the worker that all phones in stock must be updated on the “Presto” machine.
