India’s Enforcement Directorate has jailed Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal ahead of elections and is seeking evidence of bribery charges, saying it is locked to his iPhone.
Indian election rival Arvind Kejriwal refuses to unlock iPhone after arrest
Mr. Kejriwal, the leader of the Aam Aadmi Party, also known as the People’s Party, was arrested on Friday, March 29, 2024, along with two of his aides. He will be Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rival in the upcoming general elections. He is currently in judicial custody on corruption charges.
according to indian express, authorities also seized four iPhones, including those of Kejriwal. He has refused to unlock his iPhone, claiming that doing so would expose the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to details of his campaign strategy and purported pre-poll alliances.
indian express The article introduces how ED asked Apple to unlock the iPhone and notes that it has officially requested assistance. But then it becomes very quietly clear that Apple must have said no.
”[The ED has] “I was told that I needed a password to retrieve the data,” the publication said.
Kejriwal and his aides have been accused of corruption, particularly in relation to the liquor policy that was being drafted in 2020/2021. The prime minister reportedly said he had since upgraded his iPhone, which the publication confirmed meant data from the same period was no longer available.
The judicial detention sentence is scheduled for seven days, but it is not clear when that week began. But what is more clear is that India’s general elections will be held for a long time starting April 19, 2024.
Mr Kejriwal’s supporters say the arrest and imprisonment were politically motivated and that the ED falls under the government’s purview.
Apple has not commented on the iPhone unlock request. The company has a policy of providing certain information to law enforcement if subpoenaed, but it will never unlock the iPhone.
Separately, Apple CEO Tim Cook has met several times with India’s current Prime Minister Narendra Modi. India is becoming increasingly important to Apple as it seeks to wean itself from over-reliance on China for manufacturing.
