Apple Vision Pro for Google (and Android) users

chromium. Even on the iPad version, visionOS requires Google’s browser. That’s what I’ve been missing the most since getting the Apple Vision Pro, as a heavy user of Google apps.

It has nothing to do with user interface or experience. Coming from someone who just tolerates how Safari on the Mac feels compared to desktop Chrome.

Rather, you need access to open Chrome tabs and Google Password Manager on other devices. The latter is available online, but it’s a manual copy-and-paste process rather than a seamless autofill integration like the iPhone. And while I’m never going to be without hundreds of Chrome bookmarks, manually duplicating the top ones was less tedious than I expected. (Ahead of the launch, he asked Google about his plans for Chrome for the Vision Pro, and “there was nothing concrete I could share yet.”)

In addition to Chrome, I could access Google services in Safari, and the performance was normal/desktop class. YouTube Music is great, especially better than the main YouTube website where the touch target is a bit small in the video player.

I use the Mac’s external display integration quite a bit and really enjoy the floating desktop, but foveated rendering is pretty obvious on large screens with lots of small details and text. The fact that this works so well (at 4K resolution) has made the transition to “spatial computing” much easier.

As someone who can’t wait for my laptop to come with a touchscreen keyboard, I was very excited to try out the virtual keyboard. However, searching and poking with your index finger is slow, and looking at each letter and tapping (thumb + index finger) is a faster virtual option. Luckily, you can use your Mac keyboard to type into the visionOS app.

As for the display, the Vision Pro is high enough resolution, but it could be better in terms of fidelity, or how it recreates the real world. Apple’s pass-through experience, which currently offers the best approximation of augmented reality possible, is just not bright enough. Your surroundings are dim and uninviting. This was true at the very bright Apple Store, but it’s even more true at home, where I wanted to keep my office dark, so I needed more lighting.

Another problem is when I try to view my Pixel 8 or Fold with Vision Pro. Most of the time, they are unable to read. You can also find and interact with the buttons, but I prefer using Messages for the web rather than typing and replying on my phone. In that regard, I would rather use the Vision Pro in virtual reality mode.

Finally, you can definitely see the physical boundaries of the screen, creating a binocular effect, but after a few minutes you’ll be able to ignore it and focus on the content.

(A final hardware note: The Vision Pro battery is a beautiful, monolith-like object. Considering the battery life, I wish it had been smaller and more smartphone-sized. It’s just a physical object that’s easy to hold.)
