What’s the story?
In a modest update last month, Apple upgraded the iPhone 12 with Qi2 wireless charging capability.
This enhancement is part of the iOS 17.4 update and was not officially announced by the tech giant in its changelog.
This upgrade will allow iPhone 12 users to take full advantage of the newly released Qi2 certified charger, which features magnetic connectivity and 15W speeds associated with Apple’s MagSafe technology.
Belkin, Anker Qi2 charging now compatible with iPhone 12
Popular accessory and charger brands Belkin and Anker have confirmed that their Qi2 chargers work with iPhone 12 devices running iOS 17.4.
The iPhone 12 has supported 15W wireless charging since its launch in 2020, but only when using Apple’s MagSafe charger.
With this update, you can now use third-party Qi2 chargers to charge at the same speed.
iPhone 13 and 14 received Qi2 support as part of iOS 17.2, while iPhone 15 came with Qi2 preinstalled.
Understanding Qi2: The new wireless charging standard
Qi2, also known as Qi v2.0 MPP (Magnetic Power Profile), is a new magnetic wireless charging standard. Charge compatible devices at speeds up to 15W.
Similar to Apple’s MagSafe technology, both the device and the charger use magnetic rings to properly position the charging coil.
This new standard is an extension of the widely used Qi wireless charging standard, with Apple contributing magnetic power profile technology.
Qi2 is an open standard with potential for broader adoption
Unlike MagSafe, Qi2 is not exclusive to Apple and is managed by the Wireless Power Consortium.
Although the device must be Qi2 certified, it doesn’t require specific Apple hardware or “Made For iPhone” certification, making it more affordable to manufacture.
Qi2 has not yet been integrated into Android smartphones or other devices, but its open standard nature means it may become more widely adopted.
