Following last weekend’s Apple Music Super Bowl LVIII Halftime Show with USHER, Apple has released new behind-the-scenes details about the production of the show. Kicker? The entire behind-the-scenes video was shot using an iPhone 15.
Apple says the video was shot using more than 40 iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max devices. These devices were installed during the show itself or during rehearsals, including being strapped to the performers themselves.
This behind-the-scenes video was directed by Mike Carson, who says:
“Choosing the iPhone gave us a dream-like range of coverage, which was necessary for a document-style project like this that required us to be in many places at once. It is also an all-in-one device and does not use an external lens, allowing for numerous angles and operators to be placed in spaces that would otherwise prove difficult and expensive given the scale. We had an incredibly talented crew that allowed us to focus on filming, creating beautiful compositions, camera movement, and storytelling. I truly believe that it has made the shoot more fun and exciting because I can now focus solely on myself.
The ability to instantly switch lenses in moments when more information or a more intimate close-up is needed allows our team to focus on the frame without having to overthink, especially in high-pressure “think on the fly” scenarios. I was able to stay focused. For example, we have incorporated camera operators into the field cast/mosh pit of live performances. The operator was able to literally set up the camera a few feet away from the guest talent’s face, create a beautiful wide-angle frame, and start the action 10 seconds later. It was happening on the main stage 50 feet away so I was able to instantly get some high quality medium shots. ”
Carson also explained why the iPhone 15 Pro’s support for LOG and Pro Res recording was an important element for this project.
“This was a game-changer, especially given our document-style approach, where there are so many uncontrollable lighting scenarios. We were able to preserve the data, and for that the log was most important. I was blown away by the final image during the color session.”
Overall, Carson concluded:
“Overall it was great. As a director who also likes to shoot on set, I especially enjoyed being able to just pick up the camera and shoot without thinking too much about the equipment. I was able to focus on the overall story and emotion I wanted to evoke. The learning curve was small.
As someone who just loves creating, no matter the size or medium, seeing the results we captured definitely inspired me to pick up my iPhone and just shoot. So I’m excited to continue exploring possibilities and incorporating his iPhone into my processes. ”
Xiaolong Liu, director of photography for the behind-the-scenes video, added:
“iPhone is more portable and discreet than traditional cameras, allowing you to shoot in a variety of locations and rigs with minimal setup. The ability to quickly change lenses (telephoto) is an efficient advantage in busy shooting situations.
The unobtrusive nature of the iPhone helps you capture more natural and spontaneous shots. The size and flexibility of iPhone allows you to capture footage from unique angles and tight spaces that traditional cameras can’t fit. For example, a shot of Usher’s throne or a shot of Alicia Keys’ piano. ”
