Apple is reportedly developing multiple foldable iPhone prototypes. The American tech giant is producing at least two prototype iPhones with a horizontally foldable clamshell design, The Information reports. Apple’s foldable smartphone prototype appears to be similar to flip-style foldable smartphones from other brands, such as Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip device.
The report states that if the company were to launch a folding-style iPhone model, it would be one of the biggest hardware design changes in the product’s history. However, since the device is still in early development, it is unlikely that Apple will incorporate this product into the company’s mass production plans until 2025.

Apple has reached out to at least one supplier in Asia to develop components for two different-sized foldable devices, The Information reports. If it doesn’t meet Apple’s quality standards, the company could scrap the project entirely.
According to reports, Apple plans to place the display on the outside of the smartphone. Additionally, the company doesn’t want its foldable model to exceed current iPhone models in terms of thickness. This has reportedly hampered the development process due to the complexity of accommodating battery and display components without compromising durability.
Along with a foldable iPhone model, Apple is also working on a foldable iPad, according to the report. Development of a foldable iPad with an 8-inch display is reportedly underway, and Apple engineers are currently testing new ways to reduce display wrinkles. Like the foldable iPhone, the foldable iPad isn’t expected to hit the market until next year.
