Fans of iOS and Android often joke about one ecosystem stealing features from the other, but Apple is finally bringing features to iOS that Android first announced 15 years ago. add.
For the first time in iOS 18, users will have more freedom to rearrange app icons on the home screen, creating blank columns, empty rows, and empty spaces between apps. Similar to Android, icons will still be locked to the grid, but apps will no longer automatically move to fill empty spaces.
The ability to move an icon anywhere while leaving free space has been present in Android since the beginning.

The news was first reported by MacRumors, which cited a more vague announcement from Bloomberg that talked about a “more customizable” home screen.
If this is true, iOS 18 is shaping up to be a pretty big upgrade for Apple users. In the same newsletter that previewed the home screen announcement, Bloomberg’s Mark Garman wrote, “Internally, this new operating system is considered one of the biggest, if not the biggest, iOS updates in company history. ” he said.
Last week, Bloomberg reported that the company is in talks to bring Google’s Gemini to the iPhone later this year, even though Apple has its own AI model.
In addition to new AI upgrades, iOS 18 may also finally bring RCS texting to Apple devices. In November 2023, the company announced that RCS messaging would arrive in “2024.” So it makes sense that support would be added as part of iOS 18. RCS doesn’t just enable high-resolution photo and video messaging between Android phones and iPhones, but it adds voice messaging, typing indicators, read receipts, and more.
