The iconic iPhone 6 Plus has been officially discontinued, according to Apple’s latest product listing update. The Cupertino tech giant has added this old smartphone to its list of obsolete products. This means we will no longer offer repair or service for this device through our stores or authorized providers.
Apple’s obsolescence designation begins seven years after a product was last sold through official channels. iPhone 6 Plus was released together with iPhone 6 in September 2014, but sales were discontinued in September 2016 after two years of sales. The smaller iPhone 6 isn’t obsolete yet, but it has only a few days left in support.
The iPhone 6 lineup marks a major step forward in Apple’s smartphone ambitions, introducing a larger screen size and mobile payment capabilities with Apple Pay. But in the fast-paced world of technology, these former workhorses have long since been overtaken by the newer, more powerful iPhone.
Most consumers upgrade their iPhones on average every three to four years, but some people can survive five to six years with frequent battery replacements. For iPhone 6 Plus owners still clinging to their old devices, this news is essentially Apple’s subtle hint that it’s time to take the next step.
In other news, the fourth-generation iPad mini has passed the five-year “vintage” threshold, where Apple continues to service devices for a limited time based on parts availability. And oddly enough, while the (PRODUCT)RED iPhone 8 and 8 Plus colors are considered “vintage,” the other shades remain current for now.
