The U.S. Department of Justice today filed an antitrust lawsuit against Apple with the goal of “freeing the smartphone market from Apple’s anticompetitive and exclusionary conduct and restoring competition.”
Apple takes a different view, saying the purpose of the lawsuit is to turn iPhones into Android phones.
Apple representatives explained today that the Justice Department’s lawsuit essentially aims to make the iPhone look and behave like an Android device, which would actually hurt competition.
One of Apple’s arguments is that bringing more Android-like qualities to the iPhone actually eliminates consumer choice. Apple has explained that part of the benefit of the iPhone is that it’s private and secure, and that if the Justice Department wins, it would have to make significant compromises on those points.
The Justice Department’s lawsuit, which can be read in full here, targets the iPhone in virtually every way. This includes the App Store, iMessages, CarPlay, FaceTime, iCloud, and more.
