No Android manufacturer can offer a service comparable to AppleCare+. Sure, Samsung is coming close to partnering with his uBreakiFix, but Apple’s solution is exactly one of the best reasons to own an iPhone. If you have any issues, the Apple Store has immediate support available. If something breaks or breaks, as long as you have an Apple Authorized Retailer near you, you can find help.
I’ve maintained an AppleCare+ subscription on all my products for years to cover both emergencies and out-of-warranty repairs. But when he bought an iPhone 15 Pro Max last year, he decided to take a leap of faith and subscribe to an upgraded version of AppleCare+. Unfortunately, AppleCare+ theft and loss isn’t as great as it seems, and this is a lesson I had to learn the hard way. My experience shows that even Apple can’t get cell phone insurance right. This is why not everything will be policed.
AppleCare+ makes it easy, right?
Considering how easily AppleCare+ is handled in-story by Apple, it’s safe to assume that the theft and loss part of the plan will also be fairly simple. As always, I expected a smooth and stress-free claims process and was hoping that the Apple Store would at least help me out. But what I didn’t know is that everything is passed from Apple to his third party company called AIG.
In 2021, Apple switched its service provider for theft and loss claims from Assurant to AIG. This process is very simple, at least in theory. After you submit your claim online through the Apple website, you will receive an email from AIG with your claim details and a link to upload your details (which took about 30 minutes for me). Once the information is uploaded, the claim will be reviewed within 2 business days and he will receive the replacement product within 2 business days. In theory, this is a simple enough process, but as always, it’s the details that count.
First, it’s worth remembering that when AIG or Apple say two business days here, they mean the shortest possible time. Even if everything says within 2 days, it will take 2-7 business days.
Here’s how the process actually went. Once the complaint was filed, AIG immediately asked for identification. Even though the first step states that proof of purchase is required, or In the case of ID, you must submit both. I submitted my documents within 20 minutes of AIG’s request and was told I would receive a response within 2 days.
Two days later, AID asked for the same ID again. This day was Thursday (second working day). I called customer service and the representative told me it was an error and that they would contact me by Friday (3rd day). The next day I was told that the insurance claims team was currently reviewing my file and would contact me by Tuesday (day 5). He also filed a police report and was told via email to file it with AIG.

At the 11th hour on the 5th day, after getting pretty annoyed with the customer service manager, my claim was magically approved within 5 minutes. Of note, the insurance claims team never read the email I sent with the police report (which took 4 hours for me to receive) and even now, a month later. It means you didn’t read the email.
In any case, now that it’s approved, it should be easy. right?
Apple in name, but not really Apple
After all, it’s not perfect. Even if Apple does make a replacement, no one can provide you with any substantive information. First, it took him two days to get a repair number that he could track through Apple’s system. It then took him two days to “review the device” after Apple received his billing information from AIG. I don’t know what the company was reviewing. My phone had been missing for days, but my application had already been approved.
Apple has announced that it will officially replace the device and begin a new countdown. At this point, 9 business days have passed and it may take another 5 business days to source and ship a replacement. Admittedly, I’m in the UK and the variant in question is a US eSIM model, and the replacement I received was shipped directly from China, so this may have played a role.
After four days of back and forth between Apple and AIG’s customer service departments, I finally received my replacement iPhone 16 business days after it was lost. I’ve never had a bad experience with Apple until this year, but this definitely fit the bill.

Are there any companies that can provide cell phone insurance?
Apple’s name usually suggests a level of quality and service that goes above and beyond, but even Apple has yet to figure out how to improve cell phone insurance. Most insurance companies don’t want to pay out claims, but I expected Apple to do it differently, as they have done in the past. Unfortunately, partnering with an outside insurance group creates the same frustrations and inadequacies that would occur without Apple’s involvement.
My experience with AppleCare+ theft and loss also leads to broader questions. If Apple can’t get cell phone insurance right, can anyone get cell phone insurance? Google and Samsung don’t have the support or retail infrastructure that Apple provides, but the latter is probably the closest thing to it. It will be. In some countries, Samsung partners with Assurant to offer Samsung Care+ Theft and Loss, but it’s not as global a service as Apple’s.
The biggest surprise for me throughout this experience was how old-fashioned the process felt. Yes, please fill out the claim form via the web and probably A police report is not required. Still, my renters insurance (via Lemonade) uses AI to speed up the claims process, and my $8,000 claim (for a bag stolen from my car) was processed and paid within his 48 hours. I got it. In some cases, they even mention manual claims adjusters, but Apple could definitely learn something from this. It seems strange that it would take him two weeks to replace his iPhone, but with home insurance he would receive a much larger claim within 48 hours.
If you’re looking for the best protection against theft or loss of your phone, be wary of AppleCare+’s theft and loss expectations. While broken protection remains the best protection you can buy for your iPhone, there is still room for improvement when it comes to theft and loss. I think it’s much better to get insurance through the rental car police, bank account, or carrier than to rely on Apple. Now, when was the last time someone said that?

The iPhone 15 Pro Max is Apple’s latest and greatest, with a sophisticated new SoC that can handle console games and a new telephoto camera that finally uses periscope technology. It also finally added USB-C, so you don’t have to carry around a Lightning cable. All of these upgrades come together in one attractive package.
