Android tablets may soon be able to take notes directly from the lock screen

summary

  • Google is working on developing lock screen shortcuts for the default Notes app on tablets to save you time and effort.
  • Currently, to take advantage of this feature, you need to set the app of your choice as your default Notes app and flick the toggle from Developer Options.
  • It’s currently unclear when this feature will be widely available, but Google may choose to roll it out in a release after Pixel Drop in March.

We’ve come a long way since the days of basic capacitive styluses. Samsung currently leads the mobile world with its S Pen stylus. However, there are some other underrated styluses you can choose for your Android tablet that can help you write quick notes or start doing some quick doodles. However, for tablet users using Android 14, this process is not as fast as you might expect. Thankfully, Google is working to make things easier by adding new lock screen shortcuts to your Notes app of choice.

Android 15: News, leaks, timelines, and everything new in DP1

Here’s what we know about Android 15 now that the first developer preview is live.

Currently, to jot down notes on large-screen devices, you must unlock your tablet, open the app in question, such as Google Keep, and tap the paintbrush icon within the app. Thanks to some in-depth research by Android expert Mishaal Rahman (via Android Authority), we now have an early preview of what this feature will do.

One of Android Authority’s tipsters demonstrates how this new lock screen shortcut works on a Pixel Tablet. As shown below, this icon on the lock screen saves users a few taps when writing down notes. And the best part is that your device remains locked throughout the entire process, reducing privacy-related concerns. It’s also a great way to let friends and family sketch or write something without giving them full access to your tablet.

To get started, you’ll need to make sure the Google Keep app is set as your default notes app. It’s worth noting that you can set any other app as Android’s default note-taking app, as long as it meets Google’s predefined Android roles listed in the Notes section here. However, Android Authority used Google Keep as a reference for this experiment. To set Google Keep as your default notes app, follow these steps: setting > app > Defaultapp.

Rahman said the feature was added to a version of Google’s Notes app in December. 5.23.482.04, but at the time accessing the new lock screen icon would just return an error message, while recent changes suggested the feature was “coming soon.” All this indicates that Google is getting closer to making this feature practical for his Android tablets.

If Keep is set as the default notes app on your Android tablet, you’ll need to go to: setting > system > Developer options Turn it on from settings Force Notes roles to be enabled toggle. If you don’t see Developer Options on your tablet, you may need to enable them manually by visiting: setting > aboutTablet and when you tap build number Several times.

In addition to giving users access to lock screen shortcuts, setting your app as the default Notes app will instantly remove the bubble floating on the screen when you tap the stylus tail button, no matter what app you’re using. Other features will be unlocked, including the features shown. As Luhrmann first revealed last year, more to come. However, this feature requires a compatible stylus with a tail button. Additionally, floating bubbles on the screen also allow you to add screenshots of the current screen to your notes.

Unfortunately, there’s no hint as to when this feature will be widely available to Android tablet owners. The upcoming Pixel Feature Drop in March is a good candidate for rollout, but Google may choose to reserve it for Android 15 until the fall, or perhaps the release of the Pixel Tablet 2. As Luhrmann rightly points out, this feature could also be available alongside Google’s rumored first-party stylus, but we haven’t heard much about this feature since last year. .
