Google has improved Android Photo Picker, a browseable user interface that lets you select photos and videos from your device’s media library while using the app. The company has announced that it is adding support for cloud media apps to its photo picker.
Google said in a blog post:
Our photo picker has always served as a gateway to your local media library, providing a secure, date-sorted interface for allowing apps to access the images and videos you select. But now we’re taking it a step further by integrating cloud photos from your cloud media app of choice directly into your photo picker experience.
Android Photo Picker lets you browse your photo gallery and give apps access to specific items. This means developers can now add photo selection functionality to their apps without having to create an in-house picker from scratch, and they no longer have to maintain complex logic to handle permissions.
This new feature is currently rolling out to devices running Android 12 and above in the February Google System Update. This is supported by the Google Photos app, and its API is “exposed to cloud media apps eligible for a pilot program,” he said.
Android Photo Picker will attempt to auto-select cloud media apps when supported. However, you can change your settings and remove cloud media app integration at any time. Google explained that the feature consolidates your media library by combining local media and cloud photos in the photo picker.
The company said the feature is designed to eliminate “the need to switch between apps.” Photos and videos you mark as “favorites” in the cloud media app will appear in the Album His tab in the photo picker. Additionally, the Albums tab also shows albums you’ve created in cloud storage apps.
