Android needs more competition in the high-end market

The upper echelons of the Android smartphone market seem to be a bit stagnant lately. Businesses are jumping on board with AI and implementing it in everything. Because all they have is AI. AI is the latest buzzword, but let’s be honest: AI doesn’t surprise us. We want tangible benefits.

Camera progress is slowing. Some would even say that this year’s camera is a little worse than last year’s, if that’s possible. The Galaxy S24 Ultra doesn’t have the extreme 10x zoom that last year’s S23 Ultra had.

Other valuable features disappeared years ago. Removable storage, headphone jacks, and replaceable batteries used to be standard on mobile phones. We look forward to having them back.

There are bright spots here and there. The OnePlus 12 comes with an impressive camera array thanks to a partnership with Hasselblad. The Sony Xperia 5V has a headphone jack and removable storage, but it turns out that Sony may downgrade the 4K OLED panel to a lower resolution display in its next release. It also doesn’t help that ASUS did the unthinkable by removing the very features that make the ROG Phone and Zenphone so unique. Originality seems dead as each manufacturer chases the mainstream market with incredibly dull devices.

High-end phones are expensive, but that’s part of what makes them high-end. However, today’s high-end phones on Android, while no better than their competitors, often cost more. Samsung touted Circle-to-Search as a great game changer, but the rest of the phone is snoozing until it gets to the new titanium, which is more of an innovation than offering any real innovation. It also feels like Samsung is copying Apple. Is a small amount of titanium and a trend-following AI really worth $1,300 to him? Why can’t he get a unique, outside-the-box material that could actually make a difference?

The problem here is the dominance of a few brands in this market segment. Samsung and Google rule the roost in his Android market in the US. So it’s great to see more innovative players like OnePlus gain mainstream traction.

After a decade and several transformations, this product is still around, after many other his OEMs have disappeared. If OnePlus leads the way, perhaps high-end Android could make a comeback. Even better, OnePlus isn’t alone. Nubia recently entered direct sales of the Z60 Ultra in the United States. This phone wasn’t anything special, but the competition is heating up on how to get a better phone at a lower price.

Sony shouldn’t be discounted either. Particularly due to the high price, they haven’t hit any home runs recently (I wonder what Sony’s taxes are like yet). Still, the company is established, well-respected, and has the economic clout to become a major company if it wanted to. Perhaps Sony could do his Apple thing and build an entire ecosystem around its products. After all, the company excels in its efforts in music, movies, and games, so it’s not like it doesn’t have the ability to read the market correctly and take advantage of it.

Android needs a makeover

Android is a versatile and great platform, full of possibilities thanks to its flexibility, but a few powerful manufacturers are sleeping on it. These same few players provide iterative updates rather than innovation, driving up extremely high prices that are not worth corresponding to. Our quality-hungry consumer has little choice in which glass and titanium slabs he should spend $1,000 or more on every few years.

New challengers are the key to changing the situation. There can be a new focus on innovation and excitement. More importantly, you have the freedom to choose from a variety of features at a reasonable price.
