Automakers are pushing harder than ever to support both systems, arguing that users can’t live without their phones connected to their cars, and developers are adding more advanced features to the Android Auto and CarPlay apps. We are working around the clock to deliver.
Weather and radar are living proof.
The application debuted on Android Auto a year ago as the platform’s first complete weather solution, giving users everything they need from a forecast perspective. Weather and Radar for Android Auto provides radar, real-time weather forecasts, and detailed predictions for your route.
The latest update takes the Android Auto experience to a new level.
Weather & Radar now supports Coolwalk mode, allowing it to run alongside other applications such as Google Maps. This feature allows users to continue navigating while getting weather information, and the radar is always visible on the screen. The parent company says this feature is only available on wide resolution displays.

Weather and radar updates also include additional radar layers that provide temperature and wind details, as well as weather alerts for severe conditions such as heavy rain and thunderstorms. The previous radar settings are still available in Android Auto, tracking you on the map and providing up-to-date details as you travel to your destination. The rainfall layer shows the intensity of precipitation, and the weather radar shows cloud cover, lightning, and precipitation type.
The parent company is also focused on providing users with a personalized experience, so this update includes options that allow users to select default radar settings and configure map scaling options. . If you’re running Android Automotive, you’ll also see options to adjust temperature and wind power units. Compared to Android Auto, Android Automotive does not require the phone to run and ships with Google Play Store preloaded. Weather and radar appear in the Play Store on the infotainment screen.
Meanwhile, the company says it is also focusing on improving the app experience on platforms other than Android. The CarPlay version is still in development, but no ETA is available at this time. We expect this app to arrive on CarPlay this year, as competition in this space is increasing, especially as the number of apps in the Apple ecosystem continues to grow.
If you already use Weather and Radar, simply update your app to the latest version to get the 2024 Anniversary Update. If you are a new user, you will need to install the app from the Google Play Store so that its icon appears in your Android Auto app drawer. If your infotainment system meets your requirements, you should be able to run weather and radar alongside navigation apps like Google Maps and Waze.
