Google has released the first beta of Android 15 and with it a new option to set your default wallet app.
Android has long had the ability to set system-wide default apps, but it’s not yet available in all categories. Over time, more options have been added, such as the default Assistant in Settings and, more recently, the default Notes app. Now in Android 15, Google is adding the ability to set a default wallet app.
Enabled by default in Android 15 Beta 1, this feature allows users to set the default app to be the “Wallet” app on their device. This is an app that performs NFC payments. On the Pixel, this is set to Google Wallet, and the only app that seems to be working with this setting so far is his AMEX app, but nothing new yet (at least not that we’ve noticed). ).
It’s reasonable to expect other apps, such as banking/credit card apps, to retain this functionality in the future. Google describes the “Wallet app” as follows:
Wallet apps allow you to store credit cards, loyalty cards, car keys, and more for various forms of transactions.
In particular, Apple is currently under fire for not allowing other apps to be used as digital wallets on iOS. Although Android has never completely blocked third-party apps from being used as wallet apps, this setting seems to make it easier for other apps to take over that role.
