One of the best features of Pixel tablets may soon be coming to more Android devices. The new Android 15 rumor is that the smartphone and tablet screensaver “Home Control” will be available on Google Home compatible devices. This allows you to manage your smart home gadgets from your device’s home screen while charging.
A home control screensaver makes sense as a possible return to Android lock screen widgets. iOS supports widgets on the lock screen, but it’s been nearly a decade since widgets were removed from Android. According to Android Authority’s Mishaal Rahman, the hidden home control screensaver is included in the newly released Android 15 beta. When you activate the screensaver, your Google Home devices will appear expanded as separate tiles across the board.
This is a step up from iOS’s StandBy docked mode, which is limited to widgets that display basic information like time and weather. Google’s tile control board sounds reminiscent of the Amazon Echo Hub’s smart home widget. This seamless layout places all your devices on his one page. Turn on and adjust connected gadgets with a single tap, no need to waste time swiping through menus.
Rahman cautioned that Home Control only appears to work with Google Home devices during testing. The feature is also hidden in Google’s beta version, so it’s likely to be extended to third-party devices in the coming months. What’s even more interesting is that the path that includes the screensaver code indicates that Home His controls may come to more devices than just his Google Pixel lineup on Android 15.
It will be interesting to see how Home Controls changes, especially as Apple dabbles in iPad-like displays for smart home management. Google’s Pixel Tablet sets a high bar with its 2-in-1 design that docks into a smart display. This additional feature while charging makes the tablet even more valuable as another control point in your smart home.
Android 15 is expected to arrive later this year. You can check out all the best new features and upgrades in the Android 15 Beta available and follow the latest news and rumors on the official Android 15 hub.
