Google’s Material You design language sparked a visual overhaul in 2021, first appearing in Android 12. Since then, Android hasn’t fundamentally changed its appearance, but there have been subtle improvements. But as recently discovered, Android 15 promises to shake things up by focusing on the unassuming volume panel. That familiar panel (the one triggered by pressing the volume rocker and tapping his three-dot menu) is overdue for an update. It’s currently dominated by five thin volume sliders (media, calls, ringtones, notifications, and alarms), along with a button to access the full sound settings or close the panel completely . Active media playback is added to the output switcher options. This tried-and-true layout is borrowed directly from the “Sounds & Vibrations” page in Settings, using a feature called “Slices.”
But here’s the kicker: Android 15The volume panel is also foldable. A single tap will shrink or enlarge the panel, perfect for keeping the panel compact when no media is playing. An always-visible media output shortcut has also been added, which is another useful upgrade.
Google has also added some playful animations. The stream name will dance next to the slider, and the current volume level will pop up as you adjust it. This proves how much attention Google pays to UI details when it comes to Material Design.
Functionality may also increase. Although not tested yet, the redesign suggests that it will surface additional controls for spatial audio and “noise control.” The update is not yet live or in developer preview unless you adjust the code. However, it could be removed at any time in a future beta release and eventually become the public version of Android. 15.
