Today, Google released the first developer preview (DP) of Android 15, one day later than rumored. Another DP build was published in his March, followed by his first beta in April, his second beta in May, and then his “Platform” release in June prior to the final release. ‘stability’ phase begins. Final release will be from July onwards. Everything Google is revealing right now. The company says it has “several months” between June and official release, which makes sense.
As always with early DPs, many new features are not included, and the highlighted content is primarily focused on developers. Android 15 supports partial screen sharing, so you can share or record only your app window instead of your entire screen.
Android 13 added support for connecting to MIDI 2.0 devices over USB, and Android 15 extends support to virtual MIDI apps, allowing composer apps to connect as virtual MIDI 2.0 devices as if they were USB MIDI 2.0 devices. You will be able to control your synthesizer app.
There are also additional improvements to the performance framework, including new enhancements for more control over camera hardware and algorithms for supported devices, and support for new data types in Health Connect. In Android 15, your files are protected with custom cryptographic signatures that ensure they haven’t been tampered with or corrupted, and can protect against malware and unauthorized file modifications.
As the pre-beta label indicates, this build is not for everyone. This is intended for app developers to try it out and see if their app works properly in the next release. As always, anyone with a Pixel can easily sign up for beta versions arriving from April onwards.
