What you need to know

  • Android 15 introduces a major overhaul to the volume control panel, potentially improving both its appearance and functionality.
  • The latest developer preview introduces a redesigned volume panel with a prominent pill-shaped slider, a visual indicator of volume level, and a streamlined ability to mute your stream.
  • Animated text adjustments on the slider add a visually appealing touch to the volume control interface.

Google has been tweaking Android’s material design across various parts of the interface. With the arrival of Android 15, the search giant is likely to introduce a major revamp in both the appearance and functionality of the volume control panel.

Old volume panels definitely need refurbishment. At the moment, it has five slim sliders for media, calls, ringtones, notifications and alarms, plus buttons to go to sound settings or remove the panel entirely. There’s also a switcher available to change the output of the sound if something is playing.

While it’s definitely convenient, not much has changed in recent years. According to Android Authority’s Mishaal Rahman, Android 15’s volume panel may finally get a new look and additional tricks.

A few screenshots of the Android 15 Developer Preview 2 release show a new volume panel with a large pill-shaped slider. Plus, there’s a prominent dot to indicate maximum volume, and you can instantly mute the stream by tapping the icon.

Android 15 DP2 also removed the “Sounds and vibrations” header from the panel. Instead, the media output switcher will appear as is. Rahman points out that this is different from his Android 14. Android 14 only shows the output switcher below the media volume slider when something is playing in the background.

Android Authority posted a video showing some neat animations of these new sliders. When you adjust the volume, the text on the pill-shaped slider also adjusts, so you always know what you’re adjusting.

In addition to these changes, the new design also allows you to use the arrows next to the media volume slider to shrink or completely hide media. Rahman says that if media is playing, only the media slider will be visible, but if nothing is playing, all five controls will pop up.
