TL;DR
- Android 15 is ready to add a screensaver called “Home Control” that allows you to control Google Home devices while the device is idle and charging.
- Android already lets you control Google Home devices through voice assistants, apps, quick settings tiles, and lock screen shortcuts, but this screensaver is new.
- This screensaver is currently unavailable, but I managed to activate it to show you.
Despite its problems, one of the benefits of investing in Google’s smart home ecosystem is how easy it is to control it from your smartphone. On any screen he can summon Google Assistant to quickly control the device with his voice or open the Google Home app to change settings more precisely. Starting with Android 12, you can access the smart home control dashboard by tapping the quick settings tile or lock screen shortcut. The next release of Android may allow you to access Google Home devices from your screen saver.
Android 15 may introduce a new screensaver called “Home Control.” This will give you “quick access to your home controls as a screensaver.” This screensaver is currently not visible in the latest Android 15 Developer Preview 2 or Android 14 QPR3 Beta 2.1 releases, but you could enable it manually. Once published, the Home Control screen saver will appear below other screen savers. Settings > Display > Screensaver.
Here’s what the home control screensaver looks like on phones and tablets:

As you can see, this screensaver just displays the Google Home controls you’ve favorited and the current time. This UI is the same as what you see when you set the Google Home app as your device control provider for Android in Android 14 and open the smart home control dashboard from the Quick Settings tile or lock screen shortcut mentioned above.
Interestingly, the home control screensaver in Android 15 is actually provided by the SystemUI app and not the Google Home app. Unfortunately, this only works with Google Home and doesn’t seem to work with other device control providers. Therefore, other smart home apps must create their own screensavers. The advantage is that the code implementing this screensaver could be introduced in Android 15 to devices other than Pixel as well. com.android.systemui
path instead com.google.android.systemui
This means it will be included in AOSP’s SystemUI app in the near future.
