It’s been nearly a month since Android 14 QPR3 Beta 2 was released, but a quick glance at its changelog tells you everything you need to know about the rocky start facing a feature drop scheduled for June. I did. Google had some serious bugs to resolve with that update, but it looks like they’re not done cleaning them up yet. April will see QPR3 Beta 3 delivered within the next two weeks, but the month begins with Beta 2.1, which adds a surprising amount of bug fixes.
Android 14 QPR3 Beta 2.1 picks up where Google left off in March, with a huge list of annoyances and issues worth addressing. Issues worth highlighting include launcher crashes, charging failures, navigation issues, app freezes, etc. It’s not as dire a list as the original Beta 2 released last month (this update no longer requires a complete system reboot). But despite this, the QPR3 remains in a state that you might not want to run as a daily driver. Here is Google’s complete list of patch notes:
This minor update to Android 14 QPR3 Beta 2 includes the following fixes:
- We fixed an issue where the device launcher could crash when trying to view recent apps. (Issue #328803294 )
- We fixed an issue where Pixel Tablet devices might not charge when connected to a dock. (Problem number 299800125)
- Fixed an issue where you might not be able to return to the home screen by swiping up from the bottom of the screen.
- We fixed an issue where the layout of notifications on the lock screen displayed additional padding.
- Fixed various issues that were frequently causing “Application not responding” errors in both system and user apps.
- We fixed an issue where the notification shade might not appear when you swipe down from the top of the screen.
- We fixed an issue on Pixel Fold devices where only half of the inner screen might display content when the device is unfolded.
- Fixed an issue where a user’s wallpaper settings might not be backed up properly.
- We fixed an issue where the “Quick tap to start action” gesture could sometimes stop working.
- Fixed various other issues that were impacting system stability, performance, connectivity, interactivity, and cameras.
This seems to be essentially a QPR3 Beta 3 release, but obviously we should expect another update to roll out sometime in April. This update also includes his March security patch, which may explain why it’s called Beta 2.1. There’s also no word on whether Google has fixed his OTA sideloading issue from last month that caused the device to be soft-bricked before the file was finally pulled. Meanwhile, Google (as usual) has told testers that sideloading is not necessary and to wait until an OTA update is released.
Normally, if you can’t wait, we’d recommend downloading the factory image or OTA file here, but neither of those files are publicly available yet. This may be related to Beta 2’s struggles.
