MEDELLIN, COLOMBIA – The first day of competition at the 2024 Pan American Championships got off to a good start for the United States on Wednesday with a gold medal for the barebow mixed team and three new championship records in the recurve.
It was also good news for the two recurve teams aiming for a spot at the 2024 Olympics, with both teams finishing in first place after qualifying.
The barebow pair of Marcos Coury, the men’s team gold medalist two years ago, and Johana Chacko, the defending Arizona Cup champion, defeated Brazil 6-0. Two years ago, the mixed team of Matt Yakka and Christina Lyons defeated the same opponent 5-1.
Elsewhere, the combined mixed team of Alexis Ruiz and Isaac Sullivan enters the qualifying round as the top seed, defeating Venezuela and Puerto Rico before facing host Colombia in the gold medal game Saturday afternoon.
Brady Ellison moved into first place in the men’s recurve with a score of 690. Ellison, Gabe Anderson and Jack Williams combined for 2,032 points, breaking the previous tournament’s best record set by Ellison, Williams and Matt Requa in Medellin. In 2018, the difference was 20 points.
There are 10 spots available for the Olympic Pan Am Championships later this year, six of which will go to team winners in both the men’s and women’s divisions.
Ellison, Anderson and Williams will take the next step toward that goal Thursday in the quarterfinals against either Puerto Rico or Venezuela.
“I’m happy,” Ellison said. “The conditions were good and we shot well for the most part. The most important thing was that the team shot well and that was the first step.”
In the women’s recurve race, Americans took four of the top 10 places. Casey Cauhold had the same score as No. 1 seed Alejandra Valencia (Mexico), but is seeded No. 2 due to fewer Xs. Jennifer Musino Fernandez qualified 5th, Catalina Gnoriega 7th and Molly Nugent 10th.
Like the men’s team, the recurve women’s team also qualified for the No. 1 seed and also set a winning record. The 1965 total was three points higher than the previous record set by Mexico in Medellin in 2018.
The competition for Olympic spots is extremely fierce for women as well. The team will face either Ecuador or Peru in the quarterfinals on Saturday morning. Three spots will also be given to gold medalists in the women’s recurve team, unless they are from Mexico. If they win, a spot will be given to the silver medalist.
The individual qualifying rounds begin on Friday. Will Ellison meet Jose? Ellison and Kauhold will compete in a recurve mixed team elimination in Friday’s 1/8 round, facing the winner of the Dominican Republic and Panama.
The combined competition continues on Thursday, and in addition to the championship honors, there are three World Games berths in both the men’s and women’s divisions. (Each country can only get a maximum of two spots each for men and women).
