Amazon’s Fire TV ditches Android for new operating system

Amazon has been running modified versions of Android since it started making tablets and Fire TVs. Back in November, we learned that Amazon was developing a new operating system called Vega to replace Android for multiple devices including tablets, smart speakers, and Fire TV. A new job posting confirms that a migration from Android to Fire TV is underway.

Amazon is looking for employees to help transition from Android to the new operating system, according to a new job posting spotted by AFTVnews. Amazon says in the job posting that the new staff will “implement and deliver features in the Fire TV client codebase as we transition from FOS/Android to Native/Rust and React Native.”

For end users, this probably doesn’t make much sense to many. However, this can make it difficult for users to sideload apps. This is especially true for his Fire tablet, where users often sideload her Google Play Store to add apps like YouTube TV and the official YouTube app. With this new OS, that may not be possible.

Amazon has reportedly been working on this new OS since 2019, and this could help Amazon move forward in ways it currently cannot. The current Fire TV OS runs Android 9, but Google already moved to Android 14 earlier this year. But now, to avoid these issues, Amazon reportedly plans to use a Linux-based OS with Vega.

Most Fire TV users probably won’t notice any difference if Amazon discontinues Android, as the apps and user interface appear to remain the same. For app developers, you may need to update your apps to work on the next generation of Fire TV, Fire tablets, and other Amazon devices. The big question here is what this means for sideloading apps built for Android. That’s unknown at this point.

So when will this new operating system arrive? According to reports, Fire TV will be the first device to feature the new operating system. Amazon just announced the new Fire TV earlier this fall, so that means we probably won’t see it until fall 2024.

An Amazon spokesperson could not be reached for comment.
