It’s hard to miss the fact that companies like Google, Microsoft, and Samsung are constantly introducing new artificial intelligence tools, and now Apple has joined in, although it prefers the term Apple Intelligence because it wants users to believe its AI is better than others.
Many of these Apple Intelligence upgrades are aimed at Siri, the digital assistant that’s been part of the iPhone experience since 2011 and the iPhone 4. The added AI is meant to make Siri easier to use and more useful.
According to Apple, these new Siri and Apple Intelligence features will be available as beta when iOS 18 is released in September, but “some features” may take up to a year to be released, so further updates are expected in 2025. Here’s a rundown of all the improvements coming to Siri:
More control over apps
Siri in iOS 18 is even more ingrained in the operating system: you can now rename a document in Pages, close a tab in Safari, apply enhancements in Photos, switch between the front and rear cameras (and much more), all by just asking Siri.
Additionally, Siri now has a better understanding of what’s currently on your screen. This screen awareness opens up new ways to interact with apps. So if you’re looking at an address card on your iPhone and you say, “Add this address to my Contacts,” Siri will understand what you’re saying and what you want to do.
If you’re not sure what to do, you can also ask Siri how to do something on your device. Examples given by Apple include how to schedule a text message to be sent, or how to switch from light to dark mode on your iPhone. The necessary instructions will be displayed at the top of the screen.
Natural Language and Context
The updated Siri is now better able to understand when you stumble or are inaccurate, just like a real person. The Assistant also remembers previous context from your conversations, so you can ask about the weather forecast for a specific location and set a reminder to travel there, without having to say the name of the place twice.
Siri gets to know more about you. If you ask Siri when your mom’s plane is landing, she knows who your mom is and can pull the details she needs from your emails, texts, or the internet. You can also ask Siri to pick relevant images from your media library with commands like “Show me all photos of Mom and Olivia and me.”
This contextual awareness also applies to commands like, “Play the podcast my wife sent me yesterday” or “Open the file James shared with me last week.” Siri’s improved understanding could save you a lot of time browsing files, folders, and message threads.

If you’d rather converse with Siri through text rather than talking to her, you can already do so with iOS’s Accessibility features. It’s super handy when you need to be quiet, and Siri’s AI upgrade makes this feature much easier to access. Double-tapping the navigation handle at the bottom of the screen will bring up the Type to Siri interface, allowing you to use the same commands as with voice.
Siri also works with other Apple Intelligence features on iPhone, like AI image generation, creating custom emoji, and rewriting text with a specific tone, all of which can be controlled through Siri or with a tap or swipe within the app you’re using.
While there are more Siri enhancements on the way, such as the option to control a voice-enabled robot vacuum, these are the major features announced so far, leveraging Apple Intelligence models and tools. This is the biggest upgrade to Siri ever, and it has the potential to change the way you get things done on Apple smartphones.
