All iPhone models that support Apple’s upcoming AI features (for now)

After two years of staying quiet about its AI developments, Apple finally caught up last week, unveiling its latest projects to the public at its annual developer conference, WWDC, where the company unveiled a range of features that will have a major impact on your device experience, but only if you have the latest iPhone model.

The upgrades include a new and improved Siri, a new summary tool, a more customizable home screen, AI-powered photo editing, and more — though you’ll need an iPhone 15 Pro (or a newer model due out this year) to use these features.

Also, as an Android user, I’ll be impressed with these three features of the iPhone 16:

While requiring Apple’s latest hardware to experience these new features may seem like planned obsolescence or a cash grab, the stipulation is due to the processing hardware required to support the AI features, especially for tasks that require on-device processing.

Processing AI tasks on-device has two big benefits: increased security of information and reduced latency. However, not all iPhones, especially older models, have the processing power to handle these tasks. New AI features rely on both on-device and cloud-based processing, depending on the complexity of the task.

Specifically, these tasks require the A17 Pro chipset, which is currently only found in the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max – the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus also won’t support the AI upgrade as they run on the A16 Bionic.

The good news is that if you’re a Mac or iPad user, you don’t need the latest model. To use the AI features on a Mac or iPad, your device needs to have at least an M1 chip. Given that Apple currently makes iPads with M4 chips and Macs with M3 chips, most users with older devices should have some leeway.

Plus: iOS 18: All the changes to iPhones Apple announced at WWDC 2024

Plus, if you don’t own an iPhone 15 Pro and don’t plan on upgrading anytime soon, don’t worry: you’ll still be able to experience some of the AI features in iOS 18, especially those that run in the cloud. But if you want the full iOS 18 experience, we recommend starting to prepare for your upgrade.
