As always, the next-gen Android beta is already available to developers. Test some of Google’s new features for next-generation OS releases. Or you can inspect the code to get clues about what happens next. The latter is always a source of exciting discoveries. And coincidentally, one of the great features that Google is developing for Android 15 on his Pixel smartphones may have been leaked.
At least in the Android 15 code, this is called adaptive timeout. This should improve user privacy and save battery life. However, this feature may be limited to his Pixel devices, at least initially. In the future, we hope to see it rolled out to all Android smartphones that can run Android 15. This assumes Google rolls out adaptive timeouts in earnest after the release of Android 15.

Yes, that’s right. If there is a lock screen password, the smartphone will turn off the display after 30 seconds of inactivity and will lock the handset after 5 seconds. You can change these settings, but I personally choose the shortest possible time.
Like the iPhone, Pixel smartphones have a “screen attention” feature that detects when the handset is in use, even when you’re not interacting with it, and prevents it from turning off.

Adaptive timeouts seem unnecessary. But here’s where it gets interesting. The Android 15 code has the following description of the “context timeout” feature:
Automatically turn off the screen early if your device is not in use
What does fast mean? It’s probably faster than the 15-second or 30-second screen timeout auto-lock settings you’re currently using. I would be happy if it were almost instantaneous. The phone should lock as soon as it thinks you’re not using it or looking at it.
This feature can backfire and lock you out more times than you’d like, but you’ll eventually get used to it. What’s more, we can say that this feature works well on iPhones, which unlock the handset with Face ID, which is very fast.
It’s unclear what sensors Android 15 will use for adaptive timeouts. Maybe it’s the selfie camera, the way you interact with the content on the screen, or maybe it’s an AI algorithm that takes several factors into account.
Either way, if it works as intended, this feature should improve security and battery life. Google will be demonstrating adaptive timeouts at his I/O next month. After that, you’ll have to wait for it to become available through a beta version offered to Pixel smartphones.
