Initially, many Android users thought they had the option to use Assistant as their voice assistant and Gemini as her AI chatbot app. However, if you want to use the Gemini app, you will need to replace Assistant with Gemini during the setup process. The assistant’s app icon has also changed to Gemini, making it look like he has two of the same app.
Users have the option to change their Assistant settings from Gemini back to Assistant after the fact. However, this is still not a solution as turning Gemini back into Assistant will completely reset the Gemini app. To use this, the user must set up his Gemini app again, replacing the assistant with Gemini.
At least for now, this means it’s virtually impossible to use the Gemini app and Google Assistant at the same time. There doesn’t seem to be any logical reason for this other than the fact that Google probably wants to move users from Assistant to Gemini. Users with Google Assistant can still use Gemini on the web, so you’re just losing the convenience of having Gemini in your app.
In fact, Google recently announced that it would be removing 17 features from Google Assistant. Separately, the company reportedly laid off hundreds of assistant employees. These two factors, plus the inability to use Gemini with Assistant, may indicate that Assistant may be retired.
This limitation may require some users to use the Assistant instead of the Gemini mobile app. At startup, Gemini is limited in the assistant functionality it can handle. For example, Gemini can start timers and make calls, but it can’t set reminders or create Google Calendar events.
This may be an unintended behavior of the Gemini app and may change with updates. Google said that Assistant doesn’t work anywhere, at least for now. However, if this behavior is intentional, it will no doubt lead some users to move away from Assistant and towards Gemini.
