First-year students at Horizon Science Academy in Loran, 760 Tower Blvd. Loran is collecting Valentines from around the world for February 14th.

First grade teacher Casey Pirash said the project is part of the school’s curriculum on mapping the United States.

As part of his first year at Horizon, Pirash said he wanted to introduce a special project to teach students about maps.

“This is actually the first year I’ve done this,” she says. “She is in her first year as a teacher.

“I’m in a Facebook group for first grade teachers, and I saw something similar and thought it would be fun to do this at our school.”

The project, called “Heart Across the Map,” has received mail from nearly 20 states since its inception, Pirash said.

Their ultimate goal is to receive mail from all 50 states and Washington, D.C., she explained.

“We’re not really studying geography, we’re just studying the concept of being able to use maps to figure out where things are,” Pirash said. “We have a huge map in our classroom where we mark off all the states where we have collected valentines.”

Pirash said the first Valentine’s Day mail to the classroom was from Hawaii, and it was a shock.

She said Valentine’s Day has started to spread around the world thanks to the project’s recent appearance in a Reddit thread.

“We’re actually getting a pretty good response,” Pirash said. “I received a project from Puerto Rico, and then I received an email from someone in Finland who said he saw this project on Reddit.

“They couldn’t send me a card, but they looked up my email address and sent me a Valentine by email.”

Social media has been a big help in disseminating information, Pirash said.

“I know one of them (posts) had 70-odd shares the other day,” she said. “Yesterday, a woman called me from Washington, D.C., and said she saw this post somewhere online.

“She used to live in Lorain and apparently works for a company that is happy to send gifts to students.”

Pirash said the scope of the project is beyond her imagination.

After the positive reception it received this year, she said she definitely plans to revive the project for future Valentine’s Day events.

“It was much bigger than I expected,” she said. “It’s so great to see people so willing to collaborate and share.”

If you would like to send a Valentine to Pirash and his students for a map, please send an email to Horizon Science Academy, located in Mr. Pirash’s classroom, 760 Tower Blvd., Lorain, Ohio.
