A California man was arrested Wednesday night in connection with a theft from an Apple Store in Berkeley. He is seen on video snatching a display device as he passes a police vehicle and heads toward the getaway car.

Detectives with the Emeryville Police Department arrested Tyler Mims, 22, of Berkeley, in connection with the theft and charged him with burglary and grand larceny.

Officers from the department were dispatched to the scene Monday after a caller reported the crime and said the suspect had fled with 50 iPhones, valued at $49,230.

The masked man, later claimed to be Mims, was wearing all black clothing and went from table to table, ripping cell phones from displays and pocketing them on February 5, 2024, at approximately 10:30 a.m. The video showed him putting it in.

In the approximately 45-second video, the thief makes off with dozens of cell phones, each costing hundreds of dollars. Witnesses stood by and watched, and the person recording the video followed close behind the person exiting the store and getting into a black Hyundai, hitting a police car.

The video went viral on social media the next day.

Since January 19, the department has responded to four grand thefts at Apple stores in the city.

After the first incident, detectives began working with neighboring agencies on similar theft cases and identified the theft as an organized retail crime.
