This week we heard rumors that Apple is working on a foldable smartphone. Of course, this is a difficult task, and the company appears to be facing multiple challenges. This is not surprising given that early players like Samsung and Motorola also have a lot to figure out.
But Apple’s engineers seem to have very ambitious goals. They want to create a foldable device that is as thick as a regular iPhone when folded. This means the smartphone will be half as thick as the current model. Wrinkles and bumps in the center of the screen are also issues Apple wants to solve.
Hardware aside, Apple seems to be having trouble coming up with specific features for a potential foldable iPhone. The company is looking for use cases that would make these devices an interesting purchase for many people. In the case of Apple, which makes the world’s best-selling smartphone, “many” means everyone.
One big constraint seems to be price. Foldable smartphones are still more expensive than comparable non-foldable models. Another ultra-premium priced device could backfire for Apple as prices for non-foldable flagship smartphones increase.
Apple will probably figure out a solution to some of these problems and release a foldable iPhone. Sure, there are enough people who want a foldable smartphone but are locked into Apple’s ecosystem. Still, it’s unclear whether people really want a foldable iPhone.
