Android Auto voice commands are broken. ‘Oops! Something was wrong’

A recent update to Android Auto appears to be causing issues with Google Assistant for some users. I get an “Oops, something went wrong” error message every time I try a voice command.

Voice commands are key to any infotainment experience, and Android Auto significantly improves most native car systems by using Google Assistant, which can handle things like starting calls, controlling music, setting destinations, and more. It’s improving. So if it doesn’t work, it’s obviously a pretty big problem.

For some Android Auto users, that’s exactly what’s happening right now. A recent update seems to have stopped Google Assistant from working.

When I try to enable Google Assistant in my car, Android Auto keeps coming back with an “Oops, something went wrong” error. And that was before voice commands were issued. There are dozens of reports of this issue occurring in multiple threads on Google’s support forums, but there doesn’t seem to be a clear fix.

Although there is little evidence as to the underlying cause, available reports suggest that Apparently Either the Android Auto 11.1 update or perhaps a recent Google app update. Reports started arriving around the end of January. In any case, this problem does not affect all users, but it is not at all uncommon.

Possible troubleshooting measures include checking for app updates in the Play Store, sideloading the new Android Auto beta, or uninstalling updates and rolling back app versions. However, this is probably an issue that will be fixed within a few days.

Ironically, this comes on the heels of Google rolling out a big visual update to Android Auto’s Assistant. However, it is highly unlikely that the redesign has anything to do with this error.
