PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. (WMBB) — A Hawaii man trying to set a Guinness World Record for distance biked stopped in Panama City Beach today.

He is trying to break the Guinness World Record by cycling 18,000 miles in nine months on a single-gear bicycle.

He is also trying to raise $50,000 for Doctors Without Borders.

The 45-year-old history and philosophy teacher’s journey began last summer at her home in Honolulu, Hawaii.

“Jun. It ends in January of 2023, but as God would have it, it ends on March 1st, which is really close to three weeks,” said cyclist Douglas Concha.

This isn’t the first time Concha has cycled long distances for a noble cause.

In 2016, he biked more than 4,000 miles from Los Angeles to New York City to raise awareness for the March of Dimes organization.

In 2022, he cycled more than 7,000 miles across Europe to raise awareness about world hunger.

This will be his first attempt at a Guinness record.

“That was another thing I wanted. If I achieved the record, I wanted to dedicate it to my new home. I love Hawaii,” Concha said.

Concha traveled from Hawaii to Australia, Asia, Africa, Europe, South America, and North America.

6 continents, 23 countries, an average of 160 miles per day.

Concha rides his bike six days a week and uses his days off to plan for the upcoming week.

“So, my day is off today. Yeah, it’s route planning and then I’m updating social media. That’s how I’m trying to raise money,” Concha said. Told.

He rides his bike for 10 hours straight every day, which can be stressful.

“I was on my knees like this, crying because of the accident, the collision, the breakdown. The injury. I don’t know how I’m going to live another day,” Concha said.

But he also takes time to enjoy the scenery.

“Incredibly beautiful, so peaceful, so introspective, so much fun. But that same nature, so beautiful, can be extremely freezing cold, extremely intensely hot, It makes it cruel,” Concha said.

He said he also met some great people.

“Literally hundreds of people around the world pushed me and got me to the finish line,” Concha said.
